Open Championship Month (but not this year)
It's July and golf season is in full swing. Hopefully your getting out to enjoy a few rounds and you did well in your Masters and US Open pools as the British Open gets ready to tee off. Oh wait, the Masters is in November, the US Open in September (more on those in later newsletters) and the 149th Open Championship was cancelled and moved to 2021.
It's a very strange new world we are living in, but we hope you are all healthy and safe plus enjoying some great days on the course – we are lucky to have that distraction available!
This month, we are going to explore a few different things in the world of golf and travel.
With our hole of the month, we also have the memorable story of one of our team members from his first tee tee experience at the Old Course and it was a bit more eventful than your average first tee shot of the day.
We want to hear from you about your best / most memorable first hole experiences, or any memorable tee shot, and have a new contest you can enter.
Tell us you best first tee (or other tee) memory / experience, where it was and what happened, and you will be entered into a draw for Golf Away Tours prize packs that includes a dozen Taylor Made TP5 Golf balls and a few more goodies. We will also feature the winners story (anonymously if you want!) and your hole will be our hole of the month in the August issue of our newsletter. It's your time to relive those memories and let us know the great, the funny or the disastrous events of your most memorable first hole.
As always, we wish you all a safe and healthy month and we look forward to chatting with all of you in the near future.

This month, we are going to explore a few different things in the world of golf and travel.
- With the 150th Open Championship in 2022 being held on the Old Course, and as it is Open Championship month (albeit without an Open Championship being played this year), we wanted to take the opportunity to give you more details on our exciting 150th Open Championship Experience trip (including a great early bird opportunity). Be sure to take a look at that, it will be a once in a lifetime trip for all avid golfers but there is limited availability.
- We will be looking at off course opportunities, those great side trips that can add so much to your overall golf travel experience.
- We will also be speaking with Seamus Coen, General Manager at The Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews. TJ had a zoom chat with him to discuss the renovations that are taking place at this iconic hotel and what we can expect to see when they re-open. Many of our groups that go to St Andrews stay at this hotel, with its perfect located overlooking the 18th hole of the Old Course, and you'll want to hear what they have in store for you over the coming months and years.
- Finally, we have our hole of the month and with our St Andrews theme running through the newsletter we are highlighting one of the great, and most nerve racking, first holes in all of golf - hole #1 at St Andrews.

Golf Travel Off Course Activities If you are reading this you love golf, specifically golf travel and the thrill of playing great courses all over the world. Trips are planned around the best locations and courses and we all remember the great (or not so great) shots on their famous holes but even the most diehard golfer needs some time off the course. Many of the hotels we generally book clients into either have onsite spas, or access to facilities close by, as well as many other amenities. They are all located near great pubs, bars and restaurants and we can make recommendation and / or reservations for you, or you can explore on your own and find your own special places. Enjoying the local culture that way is really one of the special things about a golf trip. Most of the courses we all want to play (think St Andrews, Ballybunion, Cape Kidnapper, Pebble Beach etc) are located in some of the most interesting places in the world and offer fantastic opportunities to explore beyond the golf course. |
St Andrews and the Rusacks Hotel
our interview with Seamus Coen
our interview with Seamus Coen
St Andrews, the home of golf. Who hasn't dreamed of playing these hallowed links and what better way is there to enhance your trip than to stay at an iconic hotel you have all probably seen and didn't even realize it.
The Rusacks Hotel is located right beside the 18th hole of the Old Course in St Andrews and every time you watch a tournament on TV from St Andrews you see it in the background. It is an idyllic location to stay in St Andrews with easy access to the rest of the town, multiple food and drink options and rooms that overlook the Old Course. Imagine waking up and looking out the window at the most famous course in all of golf - quite the experience.

#1 St Andrews Old Course
Hole #1 at the Old Course is probably not the best hole on the course. It certainly isn’t the hardest hole and scenery wise it is pretty “normal” but it is special because it is the very it is the very first hole you play at the oldest, and most famous, golf course in the world – the Home of Golf, St Andrews.
