Golf in Canada - Summer 2020
The weather has finally turned warm (even in Ontario after mid-May snow!!) and the courses are opening – summer is finally here! Fair to say though that this is going to be a summer unlike any other as we continue to fight to flatten the curve and beat the Covid-19 virus.
In this issue of our monthly newsletter we want to touch a bit more on what golf might look like in the summer of 2020.
2020 is going to be a year we never forget and if part of the memories you plan to build include a golf getaway, either locally or international as locations open up and are safe to travel to, we would be happy to help you in any way to make those memories happen.
In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy the start of the summer of 2020.
Oh, one last thing. 2021 Masters ticket applications are now open, and the deadline is June 21, so if you want to enter the lottery to win the chance to buy tickets to next years event get your applications in at Masters.com.
In this issue of our monthly newsletter we want to touch a bit more on what golf might look like in the summer of 2020.
- We will look at how the “new normal” looks at the local course with our thoughts from the player perspective on how it is going as well as the thoughts of a couple of PGA of Canada Members on how things are going from their perspective.
- Many of us have had our spring and summer travel plans disrupted but all may not be lost. We have prepared some thoughts on great trips you can take in our own Canadian backyard that can help you, and your buddies or families, still enjoy a world class golf getaway in 2020.
- We are also keeping our eye on the future and with that in mind TJ spoke with Alison Metcalfe from Tourism Ireland to understand the current state of golf travel in Ireland plus what is expected as we move through 2020 and into 2021 and, as part of our new webcast series, we wanted to share that discussion with you.
- Finally, given the Ireland discussion, our hole of the month features 2 classic Old Tom holes from one of the top courses in Ireland – Lahinch Golf Club.

2020 Golf Travel Opportunity Canada eh!!! Like you, the Golf Away Tours team is passionate about exploring great golf all over the world. With the Covid-19 pandemic we know many of you have decided to postpone your 2020 guys / girls / couples golf trip this year because you just don’t feel comfortable travelling outside Canada yet. While our international golf plans are now being delayed, we are still excited about opportunities for local travel. 2020 can be a great opportunity to explore some of the great golf destinations right here in our own Canadian backyard and we wanted to share some our favourite destinations with you. In last months newsletter we called out several of the great golf destinations in Canada and this month we wanted to give you a closer look at what a Canadian getaway could look like. We have put together multiple “sample itineraries” of trips you can take without even leaving Canada. | Golf at your Local Course The New Normal When golf courses opened in Quebec on May 20th it was officially golf season in all of Canada!!! It has been a long winter and, with safety top of mind, it has taken a while to get governmental approval and proper precautions in place to allow all courses across the country to open. With our rusty swings and an abundance of enthusiasm we have all been flocking to courses to get our first rounds in but what has the experience been like? Safe to say it has been different and not without a few stumbles. When courses opened, booking systems crashed from the volume of bookings. This led to a lot of frustrated golfers unable to even make a booking. At some courses, especially private courses, lotteries were put in place for tee times leading to some frustrated non lottery winners The on-course experience has also seen a bit of a learning curve. |
Golf in Ireland, our conversation with Tourism Ireland
One of our favourite golf destinations around the Golf Away Tours office is Ireland. For those of you that saw our first Webcast you know our consensus #1 course we have ever played is Royal County Down and Ireland in general is Ron’s favourite travel destination. You also know from past newsletters that 2021 is already basically sold out at some of the “big name” courses (ie: Royal County Down and Royal Portrush) but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a great Ireland adventure in 2021.
Recently, TJ spoke with Alison Metcalfe, Executive VP of North America for Tourism Ireland, to discuss the current and future state of golf travel in Ireland and what Ireland has to offer beyond the big name courses – what are those hidden gems and itineraries you really need to consider.

#4 and #5 at Lahinch Golf Club
#4 and #5 at Lahinch Golf Club
Lahinch Golf Club is a links golf course in western Ireland, in the town of Lahinch on the northwest coast of County Clare. In 2016, Golf Digest ranked the Old Course at Lahinch #65 on their list of the world's greatest golf courses.
Lahinch was founded 128 years ago in 1892 by Alexander W. Shaw and Richard J. Plummer, officials of Limerick Golf Club. They laid out an 18-hole course, the original course had ten holes on each side of the road. It has often been described as the "St. Andrew's" of Ireland. Golf at Lahinch dates back to 1892. Three local Limerick golfers laid out an 18-hole course, assisted by officers of the Scottish “Black Watch” regiment who were stationed in Limerick at that time. In 1894, Old Tom Morris was commissioned to make improvements to the layout and he made excellent use of the natural terrain, especially the giant sand dunes. Old Tom believed that Lahinch was the finest natural course that he had seen.
Two of the most famous and unusual holes in the world sit back to back at Lahinch; the Old Tom Morris designed Klondyke 4th hole and Dell 5th hole.
