2020 is almost behind us and we are sure you are all looking forward to the new year like we all are at Golf Away Tours.
We, like many of you, are each lucky enough to be members at some pretty nice courses in the Toronto area but we are still chomping at the bit to get out and play some of the great courses around the world again.
We know many of you are as well as we have already booked a lot of great overseas trips for you for next year (and we can still help make that dream, and much needed, getaway possible for you in 2021 if you haven't booked yet).
We also know, and understand, why some of you may be concerned about 2021 overseas travel and that is why this month's Destination Guide, as we teased last month, will be more local in nature with a look at some of the great travel destinations in our own backyard of Canada.
Ron is our most experienced Canadian golf traveler having traveled to play golf in every region of Canada, with the exception of Manitoba and the territories, and he has some great insight on the different golf options across this amazing county.
He wanted to share his personal favourite itineraries with you, along with what makes each destination so special and why you should consider them for you golf travel. With this in mind, we have been we have been working hard with Canadian suppliers to bring the sample itineraries to life for you. These itineraries reflect some of Ron's favourite golf destinations and are perfect for those of you who want to satisfy your travel bug in 2021 but not travel outside of Canada.
If you’re that traveler, take a look at some of the sample itineraries to get an idea of what is out there and then, give us a call to discuss how to customize an itinerary to make the perfect trip for you and your group.
Also in the December newsletter:
In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy, enjoy this month’s newsletter and have a very happy holiday season.

- With the multiple Canadian Golf Itineraries we have to explore this month, TJ took the opportunity to speak Jason Logan, editor at Score Golf Magazine which puts out the definitive rankings of the top courses in Canada, to get his insights on Canada as a golf travel destination.
- Our Hole of the Month will also have a Canada theme as we look at one of the most famous holes in all of golf, the Devils' Cauldron at the iconic Banff Springs Golf Club.
- The last Men's Major of the 2020 season was in November and we will reveal the winners (and some interesting stats) for the 2020 Golf Away Tours Masters Pool.
- The last Major of the year, the U.S. Women's Open, takes place at the Champions Club in Houston Texas December 10-13, 2020 and although we won't be able to run a pool for this event (maybe next year, fingers crossed), we will give a preview of this last chance at glory in 2020.
In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy, enjoy this month’s newsletter and have a very happy holiday season.

Destination Guide
Great Canadian Golf Getaways
Everyone reading this is a golf enthusiast and more than likely a golf travel enthusiast. That, of course, means we all dream of those great rounds on the famous courses of the world like St Andrews, Royal County Down, Cape Kidnappers, Valderrama and more.
There is no doubt these are all great destinations, and must visits for those who can, but we often forget about all the great golf we have in our own backyard.
In the 2020 Golf Digest Top 100 Courses in the World outside of the US, Canada had 8 courses ranked including 5 public courses we can all play - Cabot Cliffs (#11), Cabot Links (#35), Jasper Park (#58), Highlands Links (#76), and Banff Springs (#87) - and that doesn't even begin to touch on the great golf Canada offers with its ocean, lake, mountain, and even desert terrain that are ideal for making great golf memories.

TJ chats with Jason Logan
Editor, Score Golf
With our focus in this newsletter on golf travel in Canada we needed to be sure we had an expert on all things Canada golf to talk about all this country has to offer and there is no more of an expert than Jason Logan.
As the editor of Score Golf Magazine, Jason has many responsibilities but on of the key ones is his oversight of the Score Golf Top 100 Courses in Canada Ranking (and the popular Top 53 Public Courses ranking as well). This bi-annual ranking is hotly debated when it is published but, whatever the exact ranking of each course, these are all great course and the really good news is that many of the very best are public and open for all of us to play.
Take a listen to TJ as he and Jason talk all things Canada golf and, if you are interested in a trip to play some of these great courses, let us know and we would be happy to develop the perfect trip for you and your group.

2020 Masters Pool Results and interesting facts Ok, it turns out DJ is a pretty good golfer - #analysis!!!! It was a different Masters to say the least. No azaleas, leaves and pine needles falling, no crowds (and hence none of those great roars we all love) and soft greens that the players could hold easily. Very different indeed.... Safe to say that while it was great to have the Masters played, and be a welcome distraction for all of us as winter approaches, most of us are looking forward to it being back in April announcing "spring is here" instead of in November saying "welcome to winter"!! That doesn't take away from the enjoyment we all got from watching the last Men's major of the year (yes, there is another major left in 2020 - the U.S. Women's Open in December) and, as has become our new tradition at Golf away Tours, we ran our Major's Pool. All the winners and interesting facts are just a click away so take a look and remember, less than 5 months until the Masters!! | Hole of the Month Devil's Cauldron, Banff Springs Banff Springs Golf Club is set in perhaps the most spectacular and striking location in the world. The setting in the Canadian Rockies is so special that only the most focused golfers will be able to concentrate on the game in hand. Opened in 1911 as a nine-hole course laid out by Bill Thomson, a Scottish expatriate who apprenticed under Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews, the Banff Springs Golf Course was expanded to an 18-hole course by Donald Ross in 1924. But it was Stanley Thompson, Canada’s most significant and successful golf architect, who created the layout as it plays today. The course demonstrates his appreciation of traditional links golf courses while emphasizing the subtleties of the mountain landscape. Pick up a copy of the book The World’s Greatest Golf Holes, and you’ll see a picture of the fourth hole at Banff Springs. It’s a par three, over Devil’s Cauldron 70 meters (230 feet) below, to a small green backed by the sheer face of Mount Rundle rising vertically more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above the putting surface. |
2020 Women's U.S. Open
Last Major of the Season!
The 2020 professional golf season is winding down but is definitely far from over with the LPGA on the homestretch of the Race to the CME Cup (Finals running December 17-20, 2020).
A key event leading up to the grand finale is the U.S. Women's Open being run December 10-13 at the Champions Club in Houston Texas.
The U.S. Women's Open is one of nine national golf championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, and is the oldest of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. First played in 1946, and won by Patty Berg, this event has a long and distinguished history as one of golf's great championships.
The 2020 version of the championship will be held at Champions Golf Club in Houston Texas, a course that has played host to Men's U.S. Opens, Men's and Women's Amateur Championships, Ryder Cups and Tour Championships.
Canada's own Brooke Henderson will be in the field, and a top contender to win the championship, and TJ will be give us his thoughts on not only how he thinks Brooke will do but also what to expect at this, the last major of the 2020 golf season.
