Not only was the city a gracious host for the conference but they also hosted us for 3 days in advance to play some of the wide variety of golf you can enjoy in this beautiful part of the US - you've even seen some of the courses on TV with the PGA and celebrity golf tour both making stops in the Reno Tahoe area .
The Peppermill Resort:
This is a beautiful property located about 15 minutes or so from the downtown area of Reno. Think Caesars Palace on a smaller scale. Lovely Italian motifs are throughout this resort that boasts 1,621 luxurious guest rooms including the 600-room all-suite Tuscany Tower, a remarkable three-story, 33,000-square-foot Spa & Salon Toscana featuring 24 treatment rooms, Northern Nevada’s only Caldarium with indoor pool, sun deck and a full-service salon.
Resort amenities include a posh 9,900-square-foot fitness center; two beautiful pools and three outdoor jetted spas, heated with on-site geothermal energy; and a designer boutique shopping. An exciting assortment of bars and lounges, including the iconic Fireside Lounge; and 9 award-winning restaurants offering authentic Chinese, inspired Italian, steaks and chops, seafood, deli and café dining. And don't forget the sportsbook and casino!

We were lucky enough to be in the all suite Tuscany Tower and the room was huge, the bed comfortable and the marble appointed bathroom (with shower and whirlpool bath) was big enough to be a room on its own. When combined with the hospitality of our hosts, a sportsbook and casino to lose some money in, and amazing dinners, we were all treated like queens and kings and enjoyed our stay.
Golf: Red Hawk Golf Club (Lakes Course) Our first round of the trip was at the semi -private Red Hawk golf Course and Resort. We played the Lakes Course and it lived up to its name as we played amid natural lakes, murmuring springs, and mature cottonwood trees on this Robert Trent Jones II designed course. The 7,140 yard course offers a multitude of dramatic scenes as the natural desert landscape flows in and around the green expanse of the course. The greens were the standout feature of the course. Heavily undulating and VERY fast, they ran true and provided a great defense for the course. You definitely did not want to be on the wrong side of the hole on these greens! |
Toiyabo Golf Club
Our second round took us about 30minutes outside Reno to Toiyabo Golf Club.
Toiyabe Golf Club is a semi-private golf club nestled in the foothills of the Toiyabe National Forest and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Washoe Valley, Nevada. The club's signature 18-hole Robert Muir Graves-designed course is a natural blend of links-style and Alpine golf that will challenge low handicap players, as well as golfers of all abilities.
The scenery if beautiful and the mix of holes makes for a very fun round of golf. You get to play everything from wide open links style holes to tight tree lined holes dropping dramatically down the hillsides. Throw in a few lakes to swallow up your ball, a tonne of bunkers and great conditions and you have a day of golf you will truly enjoy

Old Greenwood
The actual conference started with a round at Old Greenwood, host of the PGA Tours Barracuda Championship.
We played the course about a month before the event (which runs opposite the Open Championship) and the conditions were championship in quality already. This is a BEAUTIFUL course that I a must play for anyone in the Reno area.
Perfect conditions, a great mix of holes with amazing scenery, perfect greens, and first class service makes for a perfect golf day. There is also a second course that is part of the property, Greys Crossing, which by all accounts from the overflow groups that played there, is equally as impressive.
The best way to explain this course is with the pictures below and also, take a look at it on TV (Golf Channel) this weekend after you watch the Open Championship – you’ll be amazed by the course.

Reno has a lot to offer, especially if you include Tahoe, a mere hour away (many of you will have seen the Edgewood Course at Tahoe on TV when it hosted the celebrity golf tournament). It has a strong mix of golf, entertainment and outdoor activities that make it an option you need to consider if you are looking for a summer getaway.
