As mentioned previously, our industry re-convened for the first time in two years at the Scottish Golf Tourism Week in St Andrews in early March. It’s a great trade show that allows us to connect and re-connect with our great Scottish partners.
One of the best aspects of the show is the opportunity for all buyers, or tour operators, to explore one of six golf areas of the country in a well organised familiarisation trip. The three day trip combines visits to golf courses, hotels and attractions in the given area, giving us the opportunity to learn about new possible experiences for our clients. It’s a busy few days, but well worthwhile.

This year, I was lucky enough to visit the great area of Dundee and Angus. Those names may not be top of mind, but if I mentioned a few of the places we visited, you would realise how incredible the area really is. The flagship course in the area is of course Carnoustie Golf Links, the home to last year’s Women’s British Open. We visited the course on a beautiful sunny day, making it all the more frustrating that we couldn’t actually play any holes! |
We also visited Kingarrock Golf Course, a 9-hole course that you play with hickory golf clubs. I had never hit a hickory club before, so it was a really fun day, being able to play just one hole on the course. If you want to add a unique experience to your next Scottish golf adventure, look into Kingarrock.
The other thing that impressed and pleasantly surprised me on the trip was the town of Dundee. Located a mere 20 minutes from St Andrews, it’s not a place many of our clients want to stay, but the city is worth a visit. The new hotels, revitalised waterfront and energetic downtown area make Dundee an underrated city in Scottish golf tourism. |
Many of our clients only visit Dundee and Angus to play Carnoustie, but the area certainly deserves more attention with the depth of quality golf courses and hotels. So next time you’re thinking of going to Scotland, be sure to include a visit to some of these great properties.
