I love the Open Championship. Waking up at 5:00 on Thursday morning to watch some of the early action puts me in my happy place! It helps that I’ve been fortunate enough to play all of the Open rota courses, so I’m watching on a course that I’ve seen before. I have to admit, although I’ve played Royal St George’s, it’s the one that I know the least, having only seen it the once a number of years ago. So it will be nice to see how the course shows on tv.
The last time Royal St George’s hosted the Open, veteran Darren Clarke walked away with the Claret Jug. What that tells me is that it doesn’t take a bomber to win at this championship links on the south-east coast of England. Obviously weather will play a role, as it always does, and I always tend to lean towards those who have had success on links courses in the past. As a result, I’m going with Tyrrell Hatton this year, a two time winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.
My long shot pick is someone who is starting to show some of his form from the past, and has also won on a links course previously, winning the Scottish Open at Gullane in 2015 – Ricky Fowler. It would be great to see him win his first major.
Enjoy watching the Open, I’ll have my alarm set early for each of the four days, sitting on my couch in my happy place!
