H.S. Colt, captain of the club at the time of the construction of the Old course at Sunningdale, laid out the New roughly 15 years following Willie Park Jr.’s layout on a site hillier than its older sibling. As a result, the New is generally regarded as the more difficult and certainly the more aerobic, cut into the hillside. The famed par 3, 5th is a highlight, but like most Harry Colt layouts, it is pure class start to finish, and a highlight on any golf trip, even more impressive sitting in the shadow of the Old.
