St Andrews - New Course
Opened: 1895
Designer: Old Tom Morris
Par: 71
Length: 6,625 yards
Very likely the oldest ‘new’ course in the world, The New Course was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895. Long a favourite of locals, The New Course is a fantastic test of golf full of all the charms associated with links golf including an out-and-back routing similar to its neighbor The Old Course.
Among the highlights of the course is the three hole stretch of 8-9-10, beginning with a strong par 5 with its green tucked between a pair of dunes, followed by perhaps the best par 3 in St. Andrews and a long par 4 played from an elevated tee to a valley framed by dunes.
Despite being consistently ranked among the top 100 courses in the UK, one can surmise that if The New Course were not in the shadow of The Old Course its stature in the world of golf would be even higher.
