If locals jokingly refer to Craighead’s sibling Balcomie as a modern layout, Gil Hanse’s 1998 routing here—103 years after Balcomie—must be seen as futuristic. But fear not, the golf course is classic in presentation and playability, with Hanse’s hand hidden into the landscape, which has more in common with a heathland style golf course than a true links. While the front nine is good, the back nine increases the excitement to make a statement: Craighead is not to be missed.
