Sunningdale — Old Course

Prior to 1901, interesting golf was exclusively found at links land—the sandy soil between the sea and the farmland that was not suitable for crops, but Sunningdale Old, set west of London in the English sand-belt, changed the perception of golf. While no Men’s or Women’s majors have been played here, Bobby Jones did shoot a “perfect 66” here in 1926’s Open Qualifying, which acclaimed Bernard Darwin wrote was “incredibly and in decent.” To this day, The Old continues to be among the best in the world, and arguably a part of the world’s best 36 hole facility.

Swinley Forest

Golf architect H.S. Colt, responsible for Muirfield, Hamilton, Pine Valley and more, once claimed that Swinley Forest was his “least bad course,” playfully mentioning his satisfaction with his own layout here. Over 100 years later, it is not Colt’s highest ranked course, but it is one of the highest ranked courses, usually a staple in every world top 100 list. With a par of 69, some might view the routing as unusual to not try and get another par 5 in, while others might see the beauty of Colt’s ability to get 18 holes in on this heathland property.

Sunningdale — New Course

Sunningdale's New Course is the perfect companion to the more famous Old Course, and among members and connoisseurs the debate over which is the "better" of the two has run for a hundred years without a clear winner. Harry Colt laid out the New in 1923 on ground even more rumpled and heather-strewn than its neighbour, and where the Old rolls gently through the Berkshire sand-belt, the New rides taller ridges and drops through blind valleys — a purer heathland character that many players find the more memorable round of the two. There are no headline major championships in the New's résumé — those go to the Old — but the club as a whole is regularly ranked among the finest 36-hole facilities in the world, and any trip built around a round on the Old should include the New the following morning.

Walton Heath — Old Course

Herbert Fowler is the man responsible for Pebble Beach’s famed par 5, 18th, where he extended the original short par 4 into the heroic three-shot hole we see today. Primarily, however, he stayed in his home country of England, and Walton Heath’s Old course is arguably his best. Additionally, the Old hosted the 1981 Ryder Cup, which saw Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Seve Ballesteros, and Larry Nelson compete over this beautiful heathland layout.

St George's Hill

Rolling, dramatic topography allowed H.S. Colt, arguably golf’s greatest architect, to utilize the elevation change to his advantage in the peak of his career. In fact, it is said that St. George’s Hill, comprised of 27 holes, is one of the main influences in Colt’s partaking in Pine Valley, generally regarded as the world’s best golf course. A stately clubhouse looms over the golf course, and particularly the 1st, 9th, 10th, and 18th, while the par 3, 8th, famous in the British Isles, will surely make golfers take their camera out.

The Berkshire — Blue Course

The Berkshire — Blue Course is the shorter and more strategic of the club's two Herbert Fowler heathland gems, opened in 1928 just west of Ascot. Set among mature Scots pines, silver birch, and heather, the Blue winds through the same superb heathland terrain as its more famous Red sister but places a greater premium on shot-shape and shorter-iron precision. Firm, fast greens, quirky green complexes, and Fowler's signature use of natural contours make it one of the most enjoyable and characterful members' rounds in the Home Counties.
