Of all the Open Rota courses, only three—The Old Course, Prestwick, and Muirfield—have hosted more Open Championships than Royal St. George’s, locally known as Sandwich. As such, prestigious winners like Harry Vardon (1899, 1911), Walter Hagen (1922, 1928), Greg Norman (1993), and Collin Morikawa (2021) have conquered the rolling, rambunctious dunescape found around Royal St. George’s, which consistently and comfortably has itself inside the world top 50 golf courses.

Prince's Golf Club

Location
Sandwich, England
Opened
1907
Designer
Charles Hutchings & Percy Lucas
Events
1932 Open Championship, Curtis Cup, British Masters
Rankings
34th best golf course in England, top100golfcourse.com

Home to three nine hole loops—Himalayas, Shore, and Dunes—Princes hosted the 1932 Open Championship, won by golfing legend Gene Sarazen. Shockingly, the golf course opened at almost 7,000 yards in 1907, which is unheard of at the time. The golf course unfortunately plays in the shadows of next door Royal St. George’s, but the championship loop of Dunes & Shore provide an excellent golf course, while the Himalayas is shorter, yet equally as enjoyable.

Royal Cinque Ports (Deal)

Deal, England
Opened
1892
Designer
Henry Hunter
Events
1909 and 1920 Open Championship
Rankings
11th best golf course in England, top100golfcourse.com

Locally referred to as “Deal”, Royal Cinque Ports is an approachable, friendly golf course that offers interesting golf over the rolling, rumpled links land. Blind shots coupled with interesting greens allow for max memorability, and even if it is 100+ years removed from the Open Rota, seeing how the game evolved in tournament hosts is one of the real joys of playing golf courses like Cinque Ports. It may be located near Royal St. George’s, but it is not in the shadows, and well worth the time to stop and enjoy this brilliant sporty links.
