Valderrama is consistently talked about in the same light as Morfontaine or De Pan as continental Europe’s best golf course, and upon visiting, one can see why. Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s beautiful routing weaves its way through the Spanish hills and cypress trees in the same corridors as Colin Montgomery’s classy 1997 Ryder Cup performance, or numerous Volvo Masters champions. The par 3’s are incredibly varied, with the par 3, 15th being a standout not just in Spain or Europe, but worldwide.

2nd best golf course in Spain, top100golfcourse.com

Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s Real Club de Golf Sotogrande was Spain's first internationally recognised golf course when it opened in 1964, and it remains one of the most prestigious private clubs in Europe today. Set on the original Sotogrande estate alongside the Mediterranean, the course winds through mature cork oaks, eucalyptus, and palms, with sweeping fairways and notably fast, undulating greens that have always been its signature challenge. Many members consider it superior to its more famous neighbour Valderrama (built later by the same architect), and the laid-back atmosphere and storied history continue to draw golf travellers from around the world.

With beautiful views of the surrounding Spanish countryside, which includes mountains, rolling foothills, and long views of the Alboran Sea, Finca Cortesin is a gorgeous layout. Strong, aesthetically pleasing bunkers and big fairways allow architect Cabell Robinson to showcase his greens, while golfers will rejoice at a laid-back atmosphere off the tee, even if the relief does stop after the tee shots. Finca Cortesin has an impressive tournament résumé, with Ross Fisher defeating Anthony Kim in the 2009 World Match Play Championship, Ian Poulter defeating Luke Donald in 2011, and Nicolas Colsaerts defeating Graeme McDowell in 2012.

2014 NH Collection Open
Rankings
13th best golf course in Spain, top100golfcourse.com

Built by American Cabell Robinson, La Reserve has established itself as a suitable place for a major tournament, having hosted the 2014 NH Collection Open on the European Tour, won by Marco Crespi. Namely, the rolling topography of the Spain countryside produces a demanding, yet fairway layout for those seeking a challenge. Wide fairways allow for aggressive tee shots, while the holes narrow coming into the greens, demanding premiere iron play and short game. With water on six of 18 holes, and A+ conditioning, La Reserva is a first-rate experience.

European Tour Qualifying School (multiple), Andalucía Spanish Senior Open
Rankings
12th best golf course in Spain, top100golfcourse.com

Dave Thomas's San Roque Old Course was Spain's most ambitious resort golf project when it opened in 1990, set on a former horse-breeding estate next door to Valderrama in Sotogrande. Mature cork oak trees frame tight, strategic fairways across rolling terrain, with subtle elevation changes and small, well-protected greens demanding precision off the tee and into the greens. Long considered one of the most stylish parkland courses on the Costa del Sol, the Old Course has hosted European Tour Qualifying School numerous times and remains a benchmark for inland Spanish golf.

Rankings
14th best golf course in Spain, top100golfcourse.com

Set on a uniquely Spanish stretch of coastline between Sotogrande and Gibraltar, La Hacienda Links is one of continental Europe's few true seaside links — laid out by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark with holes that run right along the shore of the Mediterranean. The result is a memorable round full of ocean views, with the Rock of Gibraltar visible across the bay and Morocco shimmering on clear days. Recently extensively renovated, the course shares the resort with its sister Heathland course and a luxury hotel, making it an excellent stop on any Sotogrande-area itinerary.
