Quinta do Lago roughly translates to “manor estate by the lake,” and such a posh title is deserving of a golf course that can live up to that title. William Mitchell brought over his American roots, with a distinctive championship style layout playing through the cypress trees, ponds, and deep bunkers. Be forewarned: Quinta do Lago is an eight time host of the Portuguese Open, having the ability to call Colin Montgomerie among its champions to tame the South course.

Vale do Lobo — Royal

Host of the 2002 and 2003 Portuguese Open, the Royal course is there more challenging of the two, with 13 holes from the Royal course comprising the composite routing used for the events. Notably, the 224 yard par 3, 16th is an absolute brute, although stunning, playing over the edge of the cliff that seems made for photos and videos. With terrain rolling and long views, this is one of the more picturesque golf courses in the country.

Located in the quiet eastern Algarve near Tavira, the North course delivers Nicklaus's signature large undulating greens and strategic bunkering, set against a backdrop of rolling hills, palm trees, and Mediterranean sky. Palmares blurs the line between links golf, near the ocean, and parkland golf, away from the ocean and back into the highlands. But perhaps that is a benefit, where the holes away from the ocean provide stunning views, and the ones on the ocean benefit from being seaside. American Robert Trent Jones Jr., son of the famous Robert Trent Jones Sr., renovated the golf course, only improving this layout and making this a must-see in Portugal.
