As opposed to links golf, where greens generally sit low into the landscape, Pete Dye built most of the green complexes to be more exposed to the wind off the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, The Ocean Course has been a perfect host to numerous venues, including the famous “war on the shore” Ryder Cup in 1991, Rory McIlroy’s dominant 8 shot victory in the 2012 PGA Championship, and Phil Mickelson’s 2021 PGA Championship win, establishing himself as the oldest major winner ever at 50.

While The Ocean Course lives up to its name, Cougar Point playfully dances on the shores of the Kiawah River. Marshy expanse can often be found around this Gary Player layout, such as the 4th and the 6th, and the coastal forest primarily on the back nine. This is generally regarded as Gary Players best in North America, and the course that started it all on Kiawah Island.

A beautiful Jack Nicklaus golf course that takes advantage of everything on Kiawah Island, including the ocean at the excellent stretch of the 14th through the 16th, the inland forest, and the marsh/lagoon. Wide fairways and tricky greens allow those to get off the tee, especially given the wind off the Atlantic Ocean, while challenging those coming into the surfaces.

One of the bakers dozen Tom Fazio golf courses that Mike Strantz was on-hand shaping results in an above-average Fazio with interesting, varied shapes, bunker styles, and contours. Attractive par 3’s, like the long, difficult par 3, 11th odd the marsh, and small greens battle the elements around the marsh & beautiful water hazards. While there are no ocean holes, the property weaves its way through the forest and the marsh to contrast nicely against the routings that play on the coast. Australia
