Gary Player's Leopard Creek sits on the western edge of Kruger National Park, where the game-reserve fences run right along the fairways and it's not uncommon to spot elephants, hippos, or crocodiles from your golf cart. Host of the annual Alfred Dunhill Championship on the DP World Tour, the course pairs championship-level challenge with a truly unique African setting β€” the par-3 13th plays across the Crocodile River, and the closing stretch overlooks Kruger's endless bush. Combining a round here with a game drive in Kruger produces one of the most memorable itineraries in golf.

Fancourt Links is Gary Player's South African masterpiece β€” a Scottish-style links laid out on flat coastal terrain along the Garden Route that transformed the country's golf identity when it opened in 2000. Host of the 2003 Presidents Cup (which memorably ended in a tie) and multiple Dimension Data Pro-Am events on the DP World Tour, the course is regarded as one of the finest inland links in the world. Firm fairways, gorse-fringed bunkers, and constantly shifting Indian Ocean winds make every round feel different.

Rankings
12th best golf course in South Africa, top100golfcourse.com

The oldest of Fancourt's three championship courses, Montagu is a traditional parkland routing through oak-lined fairways with the Outeniqua Mountains as a constant backdrop. Redesigned by Gary Player in 2000, it features signature moments like the par-3 6th playing over water and a demanding closing stretch through mature indigenous trees. Combined with the neighbouring Links and Outeniqua courses, it makes Fancourt one of the finest 54-hole destinations in the world.

Rankings
20th best golf course in South Africa, top100golfcourse.com

The most player-friendly of the three Fancourt courses, Outeniqua was designed with resort golfers in mind β€” wider fairways, less intimidating bunkering, and an atmosphere that lets you enjoy the mountain views without sweating every shot. That said, it's still a serious layout that has hosted the SA PGA Championship in the past. It works perfectly as an opening or closing round in a Fancourt itinerary.

Pinnacle Point

Designer
Peter Matkovich
Rankings
23rd best golf course in South Africa, top100golfcourse.com

Peter Matkovich's Pinnacle Point clings to the clifftops above the Indian Ocean at Mossel Bay on the Garden Route β€” every hole delivers ocean views, and several holes actually play across cliff-edge chasms with the surf crashing far below. Recently renovated and reopened after significant clifftop restoration work, the course is firmly back in the world-class conversation. Between the drama of the location and the friendly resort atmosphere, this is one of South Africa's most photographed courses.
