The nickname “The Home of Golf” comes with certain expectations, and yet, The Old Course continues to meet them. From Tiger Woods winning in 2000 & 2005 here, to Jack Nicklaus in 1970 & 1978, Seve Ballesteros in 1984, Sam Snead in 1946, Bobby Jones in 1927, and more, the great’s have conquered the original golf course, which features some of the world’s best holes: from the mounding fronting the 2nd hole, to the Road hole 17th and everything in between (including the 1st & 18th playing into the town), The Old Course is the bucket list course for all bucket lists.

It seems ironic to have a golf course over 115 years old be named the “New,” but comparing it to the original golf course at St. Andrews, this is certainly new-er! Nevertheless, the oldest new course in the world is a favourite of locals, who choose to play here over the Old given the tourist demand, and the New being slightly more defined with similar characteristics. Double greens, pot bunkers, and big, unique greens help add New to the “must plays” when visiting St. Andrews.

No double greens or hidden pot bunkers await at the Jubilee, a direct contrast to the New and Old, but that does not mean Jubilee is not a splendid links golf course. In particular, the set of par 3’s are highly thought of, and the routing, bringing the golfer out to St. Andrews Bay and back on a tight parcel of land, provides challenge day-in, day-out.

A decisively difficult golf course sitting atop the cliffs overlooking the sea beyond, David McLay Kidd’s modern St. Andrews golf course is not for the feint of heart given the demanding tee shots, approaches, and more. Rather than using revetted bunkers, McLay Kidd brought windswept, blown out bunkers to the Castle course, which seemingly can be found at every stage of the routing. The par 3, 17th, playing over the cliffs, is one of the highlights of this beautiful golf course.

Those who play Kingsbarns will be surprised to find out it is built within the last 100 years, let alone in 1999, given how magnificent the layout blends into the surrounding holes. Even more surprising, is the majority of the layout is man-made, a testament to Kyle Phillips vision to tie into the surrounding landscapes, including 2 kilometres of oceanfront real estate. It can be difficult to live up to the reputation of golf’s founding golf courses, but Kingsbarns perhaps puts up the best fight of any modern course in the British Isles.

Crail Golfing Society — Balcomie

Even though the club of Crail is the 9th oldest golf club in the world—established in 1786—Balcomie is often referred to by locals as a “modern” course, jokingly playing off the age of the club, which pre-dates the course by over 100 years. By every definition, this layout is an authentic links course, although sportier at 5,900 yards and a par 69 from the medal tees. However, with four of the first eight holes on the coastline, and the round finishing on the sea, Balcomie has enough interest to keep everyone engaged throughout the layout.

One of the oldest golf clubs in Fife, Lundin sits on a stretch of Largo Bay coastline that has hosted golf since 1868, when the original 9-hole layout was laid out alongside its eastern neighbour Leven Links — the two courses were once played as one. Today's 18-hole course splits into two distinct halves: classic links along the firm, fast turf of the seafront on the outward nine, then a more inland, undulating back nine that climbs gently away from the bay. James Braid's refinements to the original Tom Morris layout produced a course that regularly serves as Final Qualifying for The Open Championship when it returns to St Andrews.

Interestingly, Elie has no record of any golf architect ever initially constructing their golf course, with Old Tom Morris stretching golf course to eighteen holes in 1895, only adding five holes. The minimal hands of human on a golf course like Elie is a true testament to the fruitful terrain Elie is graved with, as it needs no professional consultation to be a wonderful golf course. With long views of the Firth of Forth and a golf course full of par 4’s—no par 5’s and only two par 3’s—Elie’s reputation is of the strength of its two shot holes. One of which, the par 4, 13th, architect James Braid called “the best hole in golf.”

Building a golf course in the world’s greatest and oldest golfing nation is not for the feint of heart, and certainly living up the reputation of St. Andrews, Muirfield, and Dornoch is a tall order. However, Dumbarnie does a good job establishing itself and its own identity, and as a result, has jumped high in the rankings. A mix of revetted bunkers and blown out, modern style hazards await the big, brawny golf course that has fairways and greens to match the size, while long views over the beach and the Firth of Forth nearby.
