A beautiful, gently rolling property allows for Tom Simpson, often discussed among the British Isles best architects, to strategically bunker the golf course, which is full of charm, intrigue, and challenge. Perhaps the best quality of County Louth? It is a brute of a golf course from the back tees, hosting the Irish Open two times in the 2000s, but the golfer who plays the appropriate tees will enjoy the golf course just as much as the pros. Our endorsement for County Louth cannot be higher. England

Royal Dublin

Harry Colt is perhaps the best architect in history, and Royal Dublin is yet another one of his masterpieces, playing gracefully over this splendid terrain in Dublin. The golf club is also quite historic, first established in the early 1885, and host to numerous Irish Opens, won by legends of the game like Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer, as well as Irishman Christy O’Conner in 1966. This is the perfect stop off the plane or the day before, especially if one plans to include any time in Dublin.

Brittas Bay Club

Built single-handedly by Pat Ruddy on a magnificent stretch of County Wicklow coastline, The European Club at Brittas Bay is one of golf's great vanity projects — and one of its great triumphs. Ruddy designed, built, owns, and still manages the course, which since opening in 1992 has consistently ranked among Ireland's top courses and earned a regular spot on Tiger Woods' Ireland practice itinerary. The routing features 20 holes (a quirk Ruddy added to allow alternate paths through the wild dunes), enormous Irish Sea views, and the famed 12th hole bunker that stretches more than 90 yards down the fairway. The course is currently closed for a major renovation by acclaimed architect Kyle Phillips and is due to reopen in 2027.

Druids Glen

Often called "the Augusta of Europe" for its lush, manicured fairways and dramatic water features, Druids Glen hosted the Irish Open four times in a row between 1996 and 1999. Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock's 1995 parkland design wraps through the Wicklow Mountains foothills, with the par-3 13th — a tee shot over water to a kidney-shaped green guarded by ancient Celtic druid stones — among the most photographed holes in Ireland. It's the perfect counterpoint to the country's many great links courses, especially when paired with its sister course Druids Heath next door.

The K Club — Palmer North

The K Club's Palmer North earned its place in golf history by hosting the 2006 Ryder Cup, the first Ryder Cup held in Ireland and a memorable home win for the European team. Arnold Palmer's parkland design stretches along the banks of the River Liffey, with American-style water hazards, manicured conditioning, and signature holes like the par-5 16th and water-guarded 17th that produced some of that Ryder Cup's most dramatic moments. Today The K Club remains one of Ireland's most polished resort golf experiences, paired with a 5-star country house hotel and a second Palmer-designed course on the estate.

Jack Nicklaus's only Irish design, Mount Juliet has welcomed both the Irish Open and the 2002 WGC-American Express Championship (where Tiger Woods triumphed) since opening in 1991. Set within the 500-acre Mount Juliet Estate on the banks of the River Nore in County Kilkenny, the parkland layout features wide fairways, manicured conditions, and the signature par-3 3rd hole across a small lake. Combined with the 18th-century country house hotel on site, it's one of Ireland's most complete stay-and-play destinations.
