Sydney does not benefit from the sandy terrain like Melbourne’s sand belt region, but instead, New South Wales plays over a hilly property overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the outskirts of the city. Mackenzie, famous for Cypress Point and Augusta National, wrote that the golf course “presents more spectacular views than any place I know with the possible exception of Cypress Point,” likely accredited to the 5th and 6th, which dramatically plays over the Cape Banks inlet. Michael Clayton's 2011 redesign of The Lakes on a compact site in Sydney's inner east created one of the most refreshed and photographed courses in Australia — extensive earthworks reshaped the routing around the property's namesake water hazards, producing some of the country's most dramatic risk-reward holes. The par-5 15th, playing over water to an angled green, has become an instant classic, while the closing stretch through the reed-fringed water hazards regularly features in DP World Tour highlights when the course hosts the Australian Open.
