March's arrival means it is time for the "unofficial 5th Major" on the PGA calendar as the tour depends on TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship. One of the most hotly contested, and cherished, championships of the year, The Players never fails to deliver excitement. TJ has taken some time to look at the championship and has a few thoughts about what we might expect to build the anticipation and maybe give you that edge you need in your fantasy pools.

The Players Championship takes place this month on the PGA Tour, widely known as golf’s 5th major.  It draws the best field of any tournament on tour and has been played on the same course since 1982, TPC Sawgrass.

The golf course is a ball striker’s dream.  The greens are relatively benign by PGA Tour standards, but the design of the course calls for all of the shots a player can muster.  That is evident when looking at the list of champions, which includes names like Fred Funk, Tim Clark, Matt Kuchar and Sergio Garcia.  It doesn’t take a bomber’s game to win at TPC Sawgrass, but you have to place your ball on the proper side of the fairway and manage your game well.  Heck, Jim Furyk even finished 2nd last year at 48 years old!
It’s also a tournament that has not been dominated by any one player, as only one player – Jack Nicklaus – has won the tournament more than twice.  So if you’re in a Players Championship pool this year, consider picking one of the top ball strikers like defending champ Rory McIlroy or Dustin Johnson or even Tony Finau.  My pick for the week is Tommy Fleetwood, he’s way overdue for a win and why not make your first a big one!  Enjoy watching it, I know I will!
