In September, we ran the first ever Golf Away Tours Major Pool for the 2020 U.S. Open (the first of 6 Majors in the 2021 wrap around season!). We want to thank everyone who participated in the pool and remind you to keep an eye out for future pools.
As a reminder, the idea of the pool was to see how you compared to TJ’s picks and anyone who scored better than he did would be entered into a prize draw and we have to say, you all did a great job! TJ’s picks totaled price money of $1,500,817 and over 2/3rds of you beat that total so we had a pretty big pile of entries to draw the winner from.

Before we get on to the results, a couple of interesting trends popped up when we looked at the picks everyone sent in:
- Looking back at TJ’s insight, here is what he said in his preview – “As is typical for a US Open layout, ball striking will be key. The bombers that hit is as far as possible may not fare as well, so there’s no way I’m taking Bryson DeChambeau to win”
- Admittedly, at least he suggested “of course that likely means you should put money on him given my history this year of picking winners!.”
- Maybe we should be listening to TJ in an opposite sort of way!
- Only 1 participant actually picked Bryson – not a lot of love for the bulked up Bryson…..
- Interestingly, and definitely unusually, this person’s total wasn’t highest as he only had 3 more of his chosen players in the money.
- He ended up with $3.45MM from his picks but one other participant, with no Bryson but 8 players in the money of a possible 10 (including Wolffe), had $3.56MM.
- By far Xander was most picked player with over 3/4's of you choosing him in that box.
- TJ’s pick to win, Tony Finau, was a solid pick in the pool though as the highest money winner in that box.
- Ron didn’t enter, he was busy running the pool and an event at his club that weekend and didn’t get picks in, but Matt did (although he wasn’t eligible for the prize!) and he respectfully used the TJ's recommendations of Tony but differed in most other boxes to end up with over 600k more in winnings than the boss.
So, who actually won?
Congratulations go out to Bill Stackhouse who beat only TJ by $200k, but it was enough to get him into the draw, and he was our lucky draw winner. We have already notified Bill of his win and his Golf Away Tours prize pack is on the way.
We also had a separate prize draw for anyone who helped us out by recommending the pool to friends and the winner of the draw was Rob Wilkes. Thanks to Rob for supporting Golf Away Tours and his prize of a Dozen Taylor Made TP5 Balls is on the way.

In November’s newsletter the entry form for the 2020 Masters will be included - The Masters in November, should be interesting!!
The format will be basically the same although we may be adding an added category of top entry in addition to the random draw for anyone who beats TJ – turns out that was even easier than we thought it was so we want to give more credit to the actual top scorer in the pool!
See you all in November.
