Normally when we are starting to talk about the first major of the year, the snow is melting, tulips are starting to appear, golf courses are thinking about opening, and the azaleas are blooming in Georgia.  But alas, this is 2020, and nothing is normal.  So here we are, already in the second half of our summer in Canada, and finally we have a major championship!
It will be exciting to watch the world’s top players tee it up in San Francisco but what should we expect?  Well, for only the 4th time ever, the tournament is being contested on a municipal golf course, TPC Harding Park.

The course is known to many based on a few big tournaments it has held in the past, including the 2009 President’s Cup.  Located across Lake Merced from the more well known – and much less accessible – Olympic Club, Harding Park provides a great test of golf in its 7,100 yards.

The fairways have been narrowed and the rough grown considerably from what your typical Sunday golfer enjoys on a regular basis.

As a result, it will take some accuracy to succeed, and not just brute force.  That’s not to say that the likes of new world No 1 Jon Rahm or even Bryson Dechambeau won’t play well in this year’s first major, but I won’t peg them as my favourite.

I have to redeem myself a bit after picking Tommy Fleetwood to prevail at the Players Championship.  But hey, he didn’t miss the cut at least!  Of course that’s because they stopped playing after the first round, in which he posted a smooth 80.  So, although I still like Fleetwood to win a big tournament sooner rather than later, I’m steering away from him this week (which may mean you should put some money on him!).

The Big Reveal!!!

My pick this year is another guy due for a big win, Xander Schauffele.  He’s been close before and I think he plays well in San Francisco.

My longer shot pick is Sungjae Im, one of the best ball strikers in the world and fearless, I expect him to play well also.

Enjoy the year’s first major!
